It is and always has been a ridiculous argument. Should we tell them they are appropriating land that used to belong to someone else even? They are being effectively driven out by poverty and violence. Look at the immigrants from Central America. And many other European immigrants couldn't even own land or were driven out by poverty. Oh, and while I'm not Jewish, all their land in Russia was stolen from them. You don't see people walking around wearing headdresses, except for children at Hallowe'en and some idiot adults. But no one is "appropriating" wearing them. White people wearing headdresses are the least of their problems. Indigenous peoples face an array of problems, including rampant poverty, alcoholism. Not to say there weren't intentional massacres, but Europeans hadn't mastered genocide yet. Yes, brought by Europeans, that part wasn't intentional. Most of the pre-Colombian population were killed by disease. Whom did you mean by "we?" You meant white Europeans. You said "We are white European immigrants that colonized this country are the descendants of people that committed genocide against indigenous people of this country." Not being here for the massacres doesn't give anyone a pass to throw on a headdress without facing being called out for appropriation. Just that the folks that did it were White Europeans. Never said all White people were to blame. But even if your family arrived after 1890, the land you're standing on was stolen by people that wiped out more than 80% of the indigenous population. I think I was pretty clear about who I was saying did it. white European immigrants that colonized this country are the descendants of people that committed genocide against indigenous people of this country." Most Jews, Poles, Italians, etc came after 1890Īnd I said ". Not everyone has English, Irish, German, Scottish etc ancestors. There are millions of Americans of white European descent whose ancestors had nothing to do what happened to indigenous peoples. (But my mistake aside, I think you understood who I was talking about). We are descendent of European immigrants, who would be our ancestors. How can we be ancestors of European immigrants? A LOT of the time these days accusing someone of cultural appropriation is just an opportunity to attack and bully. I was new to TikTok then so I had no idea how fucking toxic it is, but one thing was clear. She was harassed so relentlessly she disappeared off the platform and never came back. How dare she appropriate the Mexican drink Aqua Fresca?!!! How dare she not take the time to “research” it to see if it had been “invented” by another culture?!!! Anyone pointing out that it was just water and fruit and no culture can lay claim to such a simple idea fell on deaf ears. She said, I call it ‘fitness water’ (or something like that I don’t remember.) Immediate outrage on a level that would blow your fucking mind. One day she shared in a video that she liked to add a few slices of fruit to her water bottles to add vitamins and jazz up the taste. Why is appropriation only offensive in regards to clothes or music and not food and language.Ī fitness girl on TikTok liked to share recipes tips etc that enabled her to lose 80lbs and keep it off. It brought joy, energy, and empowerment to a specific demographic that had been demonized and persecuted from outside groups all while suffering a very real pathogenic threat that killed so many of their friends, loved ones and partners. to which no previous work, thought, theme, concept can be traced or others connected? ![]() just what the fuck is your purely original idea? What are you doing to create, all on your own snowflakey-self, a thought, song, movie, theme, etc. (Look it up bitches)įor those of a certain generations that consider "cultural appropriation" to be such a great affront to our modern civilisation, I would ask. It seems that they're trying to find reasons to tear something down for a reason I can only start to hypothesize is jealousy, or even more dastardly, an effort to sow chaos. I'm tired of hearing the accusations of "cultural appropriation" from people of certain generations. Is it that people of a certain generation are just assholes? Is it that people with no appreciation for context or history are looking so hard to find instances of "cultural appropriation" that they can't appreciate the relative cultural importance of a song? OR. I'm quite torn up about this, and I can't decide.
